What is CranioSacral Therapy?

CranioSacral Therapy is a gentle hands on therapy used to access fascia around the brain, spinal cord and entire body in order to release restrictions. Its subtlety is profound as it helps the body to help itself.  How in the world does this happen? Well, through a very light touch, roughly five grams of “pressure” and through focused intention and attention by the practitioner.  You who are receiving the session are merely requested to relax and let your mind wander.

CranioSacral Sessions are some of my favorite experiences and the sort of session which integrates wonderfully with hypnotherapy.  If you’re wanting to reset, recharge and relax to a level you had no idea existed then this is definitely the sort of session you may be interested in

What to expect from your session.

Many people call me requesting a CranioSacral session for the first time believe it may be an invigorating scalp rubbing or deep pressure on the face, scalp and even neck are.  This is the complete opposite of what CraniSacral Therapy actually is.

A typical CranioSacral therapy session is performed with the client fully clothed, in a supine position (lying face up on a comfortable massage table), and usually lasts anywhere from 60 to 90 minutes.  I practice the Dr. John Upledger 10-step protocol system which serves as a general guideline.

It includes:

  • Analyzing the base (existing) cranial rhythm
  • Creating a still point in that rhythm at the base of the skull
  • Rocking the sacrum
  • Lengthening the spine in the lumbar-sacral region
  • Addressing the pelvic, respiratory and thoracic diaphragms
  • Releasing the hyoid bone in the throat
  • Addressing each one of the cranial bones.

The cranial bones are not rigidly fused together.  The sutures between the bones allow for a very slight movement.  Sometimes due to a fall, blow to the head or even the birthing process the bones may jam together and become “stuck”.  It is believed that the subtle work of CranioSacral Therapy can help “unstick” the bones.

The therapist places their hands lightly on the patient’s body, tuning in to the patient by ‘listening’ with their hands or, in Sutherland’s words, “with thinking fingers”. 5 grams of pressure is all that is needed for this “light touch” therapy which results in profound effects on the body, allowing you to re-calibrate back to homeostasis.

How did CranioSacral Therapy evolve?

The discovery of the Dural Pulse by Dr. John E. Upledger was the foundation for the groundbreaking work that he would later coin as CranioSacral Therapy. The development of this therapeutic approach earned Dr. Upledger recognition in TIME magazine as one of Americas “Next Wave of Innovators” for his proven clinical applications of this therapy.

From 1975 to 1983, Dr. Upledger was a professor of biomechanics at the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Michigan State University. While he was there he led a team of anatomists, physiologists, biophysicists and bioengineers who performed and published the clinical research that formed the basis for CranioSacral Therapy.

In 1985, after decades of research, Dr. Upledger founded The Upledger Institute to teach people worldwide about the value of this effective approach. Today, the Institute is one of the most respected training venues in the world, with more than 90,000 alumni. Dr. Upledger also founded the Upledger Clinic the same year to provide treatment to individuals suffering from pain and dysfunction, and to continue his groundbreaking research in a clinical setting. The clinic is still going strong today and I highly recommend a look at Dr. Upledger’s site for more information www.upledger.com and www.upledgerclinic.com.
